The task force garnered multiple manslaughter convictions, such as the case of a construction worker who fell 29 stories to his death because of unsafe practices, and a worker who died when a construction trench collapsed on him despite repeated warnings about the safety of the site. New York City prosecutors ran Manhattan’s Construction Fraud Task Force, which brought criminal charges in a slew of cases of unsafe practices. The company was accused of knowingly supplying an insufficient adhesive blamed for the accident. In Massachusetts, a contractor was indicted on involuntary manslaughter charges after a woman was killed when a portion of the ceiling of Boston’s “Big Dig” public works project collapsed in 2006. And there have been some high-profile prosecutions nationwide arising from high-profile structure failures, and industrial or construction accidents. The cases, however, can extract financial penalties and send a message to industries about safety standards. In charging companies, prosecutors aren’t always seeking jail time. Again, no criminal charges were filed, although engineers lost their licenses. Nationally, in what had long been considered the deadliest building failure in American history, two walkways inside the Hyatt Regency hotel in Kansas City, Mo., collapsed onto a crowded lobby, killing 114 in 1983. In the past decade-plus, no major fatal construction accidents have resulted in a criminal prosecutions, including the case of four construction workers killed in a Miami Dade College parking garage collapse in 2012, a fatal crane accident near Downtown Miami that killed two construction workers in 2008 and the concrete-pouring failure that left three workers dead at a Bal Harbour condo project in 2006. The disaster led Florida lawmakers to pass a law requiring inspection of the construction of condo buildings taller than three stories. Florida’s Department of Professional Regulation accused the architect and design engineers of negligence - they lost their licenses - but they were not criminally charged. The Harbour Cay Condominium building in Cocoa Beach collapsed during construction, killing 11 workers in 1981. But the tragedy led to the implementation of requirement that requires that buildings in Miami-Dade County be recertified for occupancy every 40 years - the process that Champlain Towers was about to undergo. The building that housed Miami’s Drug Enforcement Administration field office collapsed in 1974, killing seven federal employees. There are more than a few Florida examples, some so egregious that they led to changes in construction standards: An office spokesman declined to comment on when the bridge investigation might be concluded. Still, three years after the tragedy, the state attorney has yet to decide whether anyone involved in the project will face criminal charges. The bridge, which was under construction, collapsed onto Southwest Eighth Street, killing five people in cars, as well as a construction worker.įernández Rundle drew criticism shortly after the collapse for telling TV reporters that charges appeared “improbable at this point.” She later defended herself, telling the Miami Herald she was speaking in general about “the complexity of these cases.” A federal transit safety board would later blame the bridge collapse on a major design error and a lack of oversight. The Miami-Dade police probe resembles, on an even more massive scale, the one into the Florida International University pedestrian bridge collapse in March 2018. State Attorney Katherine Fernández Rundle could eventually file charges directly, or it could fall to Miami-Dade’s grand jury, which can indict people or companies, as it examines broader safety issues raised by the tragedy. Ultimately, the decision will fall to state prosecutors, who likely will rely on findings from a federal team of scientists and forensic engineers about the cause of the collapse, as well as evidence uncovered by Miami-Dade police homicide detectives or other experts analyzing the catastrophe. “An inspector would have to have told the H.O.A., ‘Hey this place could fall down, or this column supporting the building is in danger of collapsing.’ Short of that, they’re not going to be able to bring a criminal case.” You’d have to prove that someone knew this was an imminent danger and ignored it,” said prominent South Florida defense lawyer Roy Black. “You can go to any condo building in South Florida, and you’re going to find water damage, flaking concrete and deterioration. Legal experts say building a criminal case for the deaths will be extremely challenging under Florida law, given all the building plans, construction work, maintenance and repair decisions - or lack of decisions - over the last 40-plus years that will be examined in the unprecedented collapse. If past cases are any precedent, it would be a tough case to make.

The problem was he overstuffed it so much with the book’s material that the film bloated itself to 161 minutes and wasn’t overly interesting over the course of that time.īut there’s also several things to like about this installment. In his second and final entry in the Harry Potter universe, Columbus attempted to do what every book fan dreams off: to make a movie that stays true to the book. I’m not saying by any means is it better in any way than any other movie on this list, but I applaud his attempts. He wasn’t as much of a trailblazer as his name might entail, but he’s given a bad rap for this film. Get over that and you have a pretty entertaining game on your hands.Next: Chamber of Secrets Warner Bros. The game’s biggest shortcoming lies in the mediocre graphics and how the character’s models only barely resemble their movie counterparts. Which is why it’s the version I personally recommend. Swinging the WiiMote around on the Wii version is among the best Harry Potter roleplaying activities I’ve ever had a chance to enjoy. Still, the fact that the game required you to learn different movements to catch each spell was immersive. The game has you doing diverse mini-quests for different people to recruit them for Dumbledore’s Army, along with a whole bunch of silly side-quests that feel like they were designed to artificially lengthen the game. This one opened up Hogwarts for open-world exploration once more.īut other than exploring the magic castle, the rest of the gameplay is fairly basic and there’s frankly not that much to do. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)Īfter HP and the Goblet of Fire was heavily criticized by both users and critics for its lack of exploration and its linear nature, the sequel was a return to form of sorts. Still, the game could be enjoyable enough for a Harry Potter fan to play through it and have quite a bit of fun with the multiplayer dueling, which is probably the best part of the whole thing.ġ1. And Quidditch was at an all-time low after being turned into a placeholder on-rails mini-game. They also decided that, for some reason, it was better to replace the subtle humor of Harry Potter with several bad slapstick jokes worthy of a pre-recorded laugh track.Īs if that weren’t enough, the graphics were pretty bad for the times(PS2/PS3/Xbox360 era). This often led to betraying the style and feel of the source material. Instead of pulling lines from the books or films, the writers filled in the blanks with their own creativity. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)Īdmittedly, the series’ decline had begun far before the Deathly Hallows era.Īlbeit not nearly as bad as the sequel, HP and the Half-Blood Prince was lacking in many of the areas that make these games work.įor starters, the dialogue was pretty bad. The graphics are hideous by design, and the structure-building gameplay was simply lacking.ġ3. The results were… weird.ĭespite loosely following the story of HP and The Philosopher’s Stone, it’s pretty hard to tell what’s going on at first. And this was one of their very first attempts. The thing is, they still weren’t experts at translating the LEGO experience to the virtual world. This one came out back in the beginning of the century when the plastic brick toy manufacturer was working on ways to branch out, and video games were their next big thing. LEGO Creator: Harry Potter (2001)ĭon’t mix this game up with the most recent of the LEGO Harry Potter action-adventure games. It’s time to talk about some fantastically magical games, and where Harry Potter fans can find them. So I’ve done my best creating this ranking of every Harry Potter video game – excluding a couple of very forgettable mobile releases. Immense popularity, critical acclaim, and an empire of merchandise built on the shoulders of Harry and his wizarding friends allowed the franchise to pump out game after game for every movie released(and then some).įor this very reason it can be hard to decide which one to play, or which one to defend in arguments over which is the best.Īnd I know that’s the kind of question that keeps you awake at night. So masterpieces like Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone went on to become part of the cultural fabric of gamers from way back then. Rowling’s series of fantasy novels set in the magical school of Hogwarts had some caring developers working on these games from the get-go. Now if you’re big into the fandom then of course you’ll love ‘em. Movie tie-in games are something I’ve always stayed away from ever since I was a small child and realized(probably after playing the Chicken Run game) that they were thinly veiled cash grabs just like toys and other merch. At a 70 mph cruise, the 69 decibels measured is okay and the same as in 2014-a bit louder than some competitors, but not by much. Measurements seemed to support that subjective impression. Compared to like-priced cars in our fleet that week, the Mazda 6 seemed to be louder inside, demanding more volume from the audio system to overcome engine noise and road roar. We could have wished that the extra weight, 69 pounds to be exact, had been invested in more sound insulation for the prettier cabin. Our 2016 example weighed a little more, perhaps because it had the technology package the previous car lacked. It also had the $2180 GT Technology package that brings adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, active grille shutters, the i-ELOOP regenerative-braking system, and a few more features. Our test example presented itself handsomely with a parchment leather interior and the top Grand Touring trim level (although the Grand Touring comes only as an automatic, negating the manual option we find so endearing in the Sport and Touring versions). Now though, with the 7.0-inch touch-screen display mounted tablet-fashion and the surrounding instrument panel and console slimmed down, there’s a more open and appealing view. Where the previous interior wasn’t ugly, it was plain-not the car’s best asset. The design themes are new to the 6 but familiar to Mazda fans who’ve admired the smaller Mazda 3, which we called out for having the best auto interior available for under $30,000. So what’s so sweet about the ’16? The cabin, where a new dashboard, center console, and detailing surround what remain some of our favorite seats in the segment. market to see the diesel engine or the all-wheel-drive option available elsewhere. Nor do the mechanicals change in any significant way we’re still waiting for the U.S. Now comes a mild update for 2016, but you’d be hard-pressed to see much difference from outside. Rosenbaum, 36, was released the day of the shootings from a Milwaukee hospital where he had been treated for a suicide attempt. He posed for photos in a Wisconsin bar with members of the far right extremist group the Proud Boys, though his attorneys say there’s no evidence he was affiliated with the group before the shootings. They unsuccessfully sought to introduce a pair of videos, including one that showed Rittenhouse appearing to punch a girl who was fighting his sister a couple of months before the shootings, and another in which Rittenhouse is heard commenting that he would like to shoot some men he thought were shoplifting from a pharmacy.Īs conservatives rallied to Rittenhouse as a symbol of gun rights and resistance to the sometimes damaging protests that followed George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, he has seemed at times to revel in his notoriety. Prosecutors have described Rittenhouse as a vigilante and a “chaos tourist” with a violent streak. Rittenhouse is white, as are the three men he shot. Other video shows Rittenhouse moments later shooting and killing Anthony Huber and wounding Gaige Grosskreutz. Video that has surfaced so far doesn’t show that shooting, but it does show Rosenbaum run toward Rittenhouse and appear to throw a plastic bag at him before shots ring out and Rosenbaum lies dying on the ground. Rittenhouse’s attorneys say a man - Joseph Rosenbaum - chased the 5-foot-8, 150-pound Rittenhouse in an attempt to steal his gun, forcing Rittenhouse to fatally shoot him. If there is somebody hurt, I’m running into harm’s way. “And part of my job is to also help people. “People are getting injured and our job is to protect this business,” Rittenhouse told a reporter from the Daily Caller before the shootings. Video from the night of the shootings shows Rittenhouse on the streets with his AR-style semiautomatic rifle and a medical kit slung over his shoulder. 25 after pleas went out on social media to protect businesses during protests over the shooting of a Black man, Jacob Blake, by a white police officer two days earlier. He traveled to Kenosha, which is only about 15 miles (24 kilometers) from his home, on Aug. Clark's understanding of leverage and hand placement from wrestling has helped him immensely as he battles in the trenches. Much like Daniels and former Packer Scott Wells, Clark was a terrific high school wrestler. So I think that played a huge part of it in me improving my pass rush." That was one of the biggest things to me, to understand pass rush lanes, where I'm supposed to be at, and how the quarterback will fall into my lap. "I studied offensive linemen, and I studied protections a lot my last year with my defensive line coach, Coach Angus (McClure). "Honestly, I took more advantage of the 1-on-1s, and I took more advantage of all the mess-ups that the offensive lines had. "I had better use of hands last year," Clark said of the 2015 season. Pro Football Focus gave Clark the fifth-highest grade at stuffing the run in 2014, then he added a bevy of pass rush moves to his game in 2015. Kenny was just nine at the time.īut that didn't stop Clark from excelling.Ĭlark played immediately at UCLA. Getting to this day wasn't easy for Clark.Ĭlark's father, Kenny Clark Sr., was sentenced to 55 years in prison in 2005 for second-degree murder. I thought he had the ability to be versatile along our line, play not only in base, but in sub packages." His effort level for a big guy was really impressive. "He's a playmaker from the inside which is hard to find. "His power, his instincts, his authority to fight pressure. "I think he has some dominant traits on tape sometimes," Gutekunst said. Packers director of college scouting Brian Gutekunst agreed. He's a young kid, and there's a lot of growth potential in that kid." "I don't know what the coach is going to do with him, but I really believe he has enough ability to help us get over the hump. "I felt from viewing him he could come in and play," said Packers West regional scout Sam Seale. For now, though, Clark will step into Raji's old spot in the base 3-4 defense, and perhaps play on some passing downs. Time will tell if Clark has the necessary size to hold up on the nose. In 2015, Clark had six sacks, 11 tackles for loss and was second on the Bruins with 75 tackles. There's nothing silly about Clark's game.Ĭlark is a rare nose tackle who can generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks. You don't want to jinx yourself and all that. "But then as you started getting closer you look up there and go, 'Wouldn't that be nice?' But I can't talk about it and I never mention it to anybody else in the room. "You sit there for two hours and you don't even want to look at the names because you think they're going to jinx something," Thompson said. Thompson could have moved back and gambled that Clark - or another defensive lineman he wanted - might be available.īut Thompson had his eye on Clark much of the night, and when the object of his affection was available, Thompson wasn't going anywhere. Thompson took several calls from teams interested in the 27th pick. "But still we drafted this young man because we felt like he was the best player available."Ĭlark, who won't turn 21 until October, was often overlooked in a loaded class of defensive linemen. While Thompson never admits that he drafts for need, Clark's arrival fills arguably the No. In a draft loaded with defensive linemen, Thompson used his first-round pick on Clark, a 6-foot-2½, 315-pound nose tackle from UCLA.Ĭlark will be expected to contribute from Day 1 at a position with a dearth of talent following the retirement of Raji and the four-game suspension of Mike Pennel. And now, Thompson is crossing his fingers that Kenny Clark can join the "hit" list and not the "bust" chart. Thompson has found some gems, too, such as Mike Daniels and B.J. Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson has made some of his most memorable drafting mistakes on defensive linemen.
